Time to pass Equal Rights Amendment

Published:

Ratification by two more states for the Equal Rights Amendment will put it squarely in the United States Constitution. Illinois legislators now have a chance to be a part of this cause.

In the 1980s, I wrote my first letter to the editor in support of the ERA, as I was president of the Sauk Valley League of Women Voters. Phyllis Schlafly, an ultra-conservative anti-ERA icon of the time, preached extreme and alarmist views about the changes in the roles of women.

Many women of the time, including my mother (then in her 90s), were staunch followers of Schlafly’s views about a woman’s place and her anti-ERA philosophy. She warned people about the dangers of same-gender bathrooms, and the alarming inevitability of women serving in combat.

Both of those ideas have come to fruition, and yet the sky has not fallen. I, in fact, served as a Navy lieutenant during the Korean War alongside the men.

By making inroads into radio, television and even the nation’s churches, the Schlafly believers prevailed, and this human rights amendment, the ERA, did not get passed at that time.

My friends, contrary to what has been said about some, the ERA is not an amendment exclusively about women. It is about human rights. Human rights for all men; all women; all races; all religions; all political parties; all straight people; and all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

This is a nonpartisan issue. So, Republicans, Democrats and independents, we need your support to pass this amendment once and for all.

Get busy. Contact your state legislators. Write. Phone. Email. We can’t wait any longer. It’s time for the ERA for Illinois and the United States of America.

Disagrees with student walkout to protest guns

William Leesman

Galt

A recent article reported on the student walkout in area schools to “protest” guns.

Anyone with a shred of sense (which excludes liberals) could only shake their head.

It was not reported, but I hope each of those children were given a can of play dough and a furry stuffed puppy to help them cope.

Any student who participated in the “walkout” should be suspended for one week.

Any administrative staff allowing this nonsense should be docked one week’s pay, or better yet, terminated.

Any school board member condoning this ridiculous behavior should resign immediately, or be removed by their employers.

These students and administrators are being used by the elites as what they call useful idiots. History shows once the disarmament is complete, they will be the first eliminated.

If these children feel the need to protest, they should do so on their own time and off school property. They are in school to learn.

Perhaps our Constitution would be a good place to start. It’s called the Bill of Rights, not the Bill of Privileges.

All gun laws are illegal laws per the Second Amendment – “ ... shall not be infringed.”

Former 9th District Circuit Court Judge AlexKozinski succinctly stated: “However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.”

Make no mistake, the elites want total control. With guns, we are citizens.

Without guns, we are slaves. Think Russia, Germany and China. Citizens disarmed. Millions slaughtered by their governments.
