Local Roundup: Gould has two homers, 4 RBIs in Warrior win

Polo softball rallies, but falls to Durand; AFC baseball wins regional quarterfinal on walk-off

Gretchen Gould’s two home runs and four RBIs powered the Sterling softball team to a 9-3 win at home Tuesday over United Township.

Grace Gould had two singles
and two RBIs, while Jordan Thormeyer had two singles and an RBI. Amayia Hernandez and Hannah Kessler each drove in a run for Sterling.

Maddie Corwell earned the win on Senior Day, tossing seven innings and striking out nine while allowing three runs (two earned), five hits and three walks.

Kaneland 8, Rock Falls 2: The Rockets fell behind 5-0 after two innings in a nonconference road loss to the Knights.

Payton Johnson went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for Rock Falls. Bailee Reynolds had two singles, while Jaida Dean drove in a run.

Payton Yanes took the loss in the circle, allowing eight runs (seven earned), 11 hits and two walks while striking out two batters over six innings.

Rochelle 11, Dixon 1, 5 inn.: The Duchesses couldn’t keep up with the Hubs in a nonconference road loss.

Ashley Blythe took the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs (seven earned), four hits, six walks and recording five strikeouts over four innings. She also had a double
at the plate.

Leigha Grove went 2-for-3 for Dixon. The two teams will meet next Monday in the 3A Sterling Regional quarterfinal.

1A Milledgeville Regional

Milledgeville 10, Pecatonica 0: The host Missiles cruised past the Indians in the regional semfinals, and will take on Durand for the regional title.

Durand 8, Polo 7: The Marcos fell just short in a season-ending loss to the Bulldogs.

Polo trailed 5-2 before taking the lead with a five-run top of the sixth, but Durand answered with three runs in its half of the inning.

Rilley Peterson had four RBIs. Zoie Sellers added three.

Sydney Gunder struck out eight.

1A Lena-Winslow Regional

Aquin 18, Morrison 14: The Fillies’ season came to a close after a high-scoring affair with the Bulldogs at Read Park in Freeport.

Aquin will take on Eastland in the regional semifinals in Lena.

2A Byron Regional

Rockford Lutheran 7, West
Carroll 5: The Thunder fell in the regional semifinals to the

Lutheran will take on the host Tigers for the regional title.


Rochelle 8, Dixon 1: A three-run second and a three-run third helped the Hubs knock off the Dukes in Rochelle.

Peyton Lawrence had an RBI. John Oldman and Joseph Heckert had hits.

Lawrence pitched 2 1/3 innings and struck out five.

Rock Falls 2, Galesburg 1: Alec Akerman’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fifth put the Rockets up for good in a home win against the Silver Streaks.

Akerman’s hit drove in Chase Chappell, who was hit by a pitch and went to third on a single by Kody Velazquez.

Jay Schueler (4-0) tossed the first five innings and was the winning pitcher. He allowed one run, five hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts. Jalen Bickett and Grant Wasson each threw one inning of scoreless relief for Rock Falls (16-10).

1A AFC Regional

AFC 3, LaMoille-Ohio 2, 8 inn.: The Raiders got a walk-off single from Cody Penick to win the 1A AFC Regional quarterfinal.

Penick drove in Jeremy Etes, who had reached second on an error in the outfield to lead off the inning and went to third on a sacrifice bunt.

Michael Thompson also drove in a run for the Raiders.

Garrett Drew pitched five innings for a no decision, striking out seven. Adam Hart pitched the final three hitless innings for the win. He struck out five.
