Set sail on Centennial’s new fleet of kid-pleasin’ paddleboats

ROCK FALLS – Hey mateys, how'd you like to paddle the Centennial seas in a bright red pirate ship, fleeing an angry dragon or chasing a magic swan?

With a little imagination and the new members of Coloma Park District's paddleboat fleet, your kids can do just that.

Four new fiberglass additions, which cost $16,000 all told, bring the park district's fleet to eight paddleboats and six canoes, said Mike Sterba, its interim executive director.

It's entertainment that won't break your treasure chest: Boats can be rented for $6 an hour from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday and holidays.

The district's older steel boats, bought in 1975, still will be available to rent, but kids probably will want to take the new boats instead, Sterba said. If there's enough interest, more boats with character could be bought next year, he said.

Preschoolers from the park's Little Red School House were the first to set sail in the new boats, he said.

"The dragon is the most popular. The kids just couldn't stay off of it."
